UK Bearded Dragons: Vivarium Decoration |
The vivarium for a bearded dragon should have enough internal decoration and landscaping to allow for a happy and relaxed lizard with branches for climbing and basking under the secondary heat source which should be secure. These branches should be of various sizes and not ooze pitch or have a sticky sap; oak works very well. The branches should be as wide as the width of the Bearded Dragon. Boards covered with indoor / outdoor carpet also make good climbing posts. A few things to keep in mind when choosing to add branches to the environment is that the branch will not conduct/absorb heat as well as a rock. You will need to monitor the temperature to be sure it is adequate for your dragon to digest its food. Branches also make a great hiding place for small crickets. Crickets will crawl into any split or peeling bark that they can find... so be sure to shake out the branch in the evening to avoid excess crickets running around when the lights go out. Flat-bottomed, smooth rocks are a good addition to the habitat, if they are smooth it aids easy cleaning and when placed under a basking light get very warm and provide heat to the bearded dragons underbelly, which helps to aid digestion. With this form of heat they receive heat from the top - via a basking light, and from the bottom - via the heated rock also the rocks can help wear down the toenails, which in captivity, must be clipped often. Reptiles like a place where they can hide. This could be an empty cardboard box, cardboard tube, or flower pot. The hiding place should provide a snug fit and should be high in the enclosure. If your Bearded Dragon does not use its hiding place, try a different one or move it to a different location. Appropriate plants in the enclosure can provide humidity, shade, and a sense of security. They also add an aesthetic quality to the enclosure. Be sure they are non-toxic. Dracaena, Ficus benjamina, and hibiscus are good choices. Be sure the plants have not been treated with pesticides and the potting soil does not contain vermiculite, pesticides, fertiliser, or wetting agents. Washing the plant with a water spray and watering it thoroughly several times to the point where water runs out of the bottom of the pot, should help remove toxic chemicals, which may have been used. Keeping purchased plants in a different part of the house for a while before putting them in the enclosure will also be helpful. Having said all this there are now available main plastic and artificial plants available for inclusion in the vivarium with many being very lifelike and suitable for your dragons to enjoy. All people have there own thoughts and ideas concerning the vivarium decoration and it is possible to add most items as long as you think that your bearded dragon likes to climb and needs space to be able to move around freely.
